Complementary quantity in Swedish dialects
نویسندگان
چکیده
The current study is undertaken within the project Swedia 2000, one objective of which is the development of a quantity typology for Swedish dialects. To that end, a series of studies has hitherto been undertaken. Strangert and Wretling (2002), Schaeffler, Wretling and Strangert (2002) and Schaeffler and Wretling (2002) report on temporal and/or spectral aspects of quantity distinctions in Northern dialects of Sweden and Swedish-speaking areas of Finland. The studies all depart from the standard phonologic analysis of Swedish (Elert, 1964) according to which there is a length distinction in vowels as well as consonants and moreover, a complementary pattern of the vowel and immediately following consonant in stressed syllables resulting in sequences of V:C and VC:, respectively. Also, in a recent study, Schaeffler and Wretling (2003) employing a top-down type of approach, related quantity data to a traditional classification of dialect areas. In contrast, the approach here is bottom-up, starting out from data without any pre-determined idea of dialect areas. We aim at an overview of complementary quantity manifestations based on speakers from close to 70 locations all over Sweden and the Swedish-speaking areas in Finland.

On the Development of a Quantity Typology for Swedish Dialects
This article reports first results of a quantity typology study of Swedish dialects, conducted within the Swedia2000 project (see also www.swedia.nu). The examination of recordings from 20 different areas suggests three preliminary types of quantity distinctions: one type shows the usual Swedish complementary quantity distinction, one type uses an additional quantity pattern and one type shows ...
متن کاملQuantity and Preaspiration in Northern Swedish Dialects
Preaspiration is not unusual in connection with unvoiced consonants in Swedish. In all the 20 Northern Swedish dialects covered in this study unvoiced stops following stressed vowels are preaspirated to at least some extent, although preaspiration is not characteristic for all speakers. However, in two of the dialects preaspiration plays a more prominent and even normative role, being a means t...
متن کاملPhonological Quantity in Swedish dialects: A data-driv- en categorisation
This study presents a data-driven categorisation (cluster analysis) of 86 Swedish dialects, based on durational measurements of long and short vowels and consonants. The study reveals a clear geographic distribution that, for the most part, corresponds with dialectological descriptions. For a minor group of dialects, however, the results suggest mismatches between the quantity system and the ob...
متن کاملQuantity in ten Swedish dialects in Northern Sweden and Österbotten in Finland
The paper presents duration data based on V:C and VC: sequences in isolated words in ten dialects spoken in the north of Sweden (Norrbotten and Västerbotten) and Finland (Österbotten). Data are given as ratios of phonologically short to long vowels and consonants (V/V: and C/C:), and vowels to following consonants (V/C: and V:/C). Compared to Central Standard Swedish all the dialects employ gre...
متن کاملPreaspiration in Southern Swedish dialects
It has been observed that preaspirated stops are produced in various southern Swedish dialects (Götaland). In this paper, a closer look has been taken at the geographic distribution of the occurrence of preaspirated stops and whether it is used to enhance quantity contrast.
